Why choosing the right cement matters

Cement is one of the most important materials in any construction project. It affects the strength, durability, appearance, and long-term performance of foundations, columns, beams, floors, blocks, plastering, and other structural work.

The cheapest option is not always the most economical choice. Using a product that is unsuitable for the intended application can lead to cracking, weak concrete, unnecessary repairs, and higher overall project costs.

Consider the intended application

Different construction activities may require different strength levels, setting characteristics, and resistance properties. Before purchasing cement, identify whether it will be used for structural concrete, block production, plastering, flooring, drainage, or general masonry.

  • Structural work should follow the engineer's approved specification.
  • Block production requires consistent mixing and controlled curing.
  • Plastering benefits from good workability and correct sand ratios.
  • Concrete exposed to moisture may require additional durability planning.

Check production and storage conditions

Cement should be dry, free-flowing, properly sealed, and protected from moisture. Bags that have hardened lumps may have absorbed moisture and may no longer perform as expected.

Store cement on raised wooden pallets in a dry and covered location. Keep bags away from walls, rain, standing water, and excessive humidity. Use older stock before recently delivered stock.

Use the correct mix and curing process

Even high-quality cement will not produce good results when mixed incorrectly. Follow approved mix ratios, use clean water, measure materials consistently, and avoid adding excess water.

Fresh concrete and blocks must also be cured correctly. Proper curing helps cement develop strength and reduces surface cracking caused by rapid moisture loss.
